This has been a very popular question this windy season. My answer, BOTH!
I’ve done a lot of Wind Foiling over the last year and I continue to gain confidence and improve almost every time I’m on the water. Advancements are coming quicker then with my seven year windsurfing journey but I believe this is due to all the hard work I’ve put in learning to windsurf. In my opinion Wind Foiling is simply an evolutionary step and I’m hooked in. Learning to Wind Foil has been time very well spent.
On the fin side, I’m a better fin sailor due to Wind Foiling. My fin sailing plateaued a couple of years ago and I was struggling to break through to a next level but more time on the water due to light wind foiling has had a very positive impact on my fin sailing. I’m more relaxed and my technique has greatly improved. I’ve especially noticed this while working on my carve gybes. It almost feels like my gybes are now in slow motion. I can clearly see each step and feel in balance and calm as I fly through a turn. Progress is once again coming quickly and I’m always excited to be on a fin when the conditions are fin-tastic.
Fin or Foil – They are different but also very similar. Each option provides new and exciting ways to sail. The calm, relaxed, pure feeling of foil sailing and the exhilarating and intensity of fin sailing. I love them both.
Heading into the Summer months (foiling season) I’m upgrading my foil equipment from a 2021 Starboard Foil Freeride 150 to a new 2024 Starbord Foil Freeride 75. I will now own three boards, the Freeride 75 and two (fin dedicated) 2022 Starboard Carves (109 & 129). I’m confident these three boards will provide me with a great deal of options for sailing in a variety of conditions and locations around Tampa Bay for sometime to come.
Bottom line anytime I’m sailing, fin or foil, I’m a happy sailor.
